Pilgrimage is a form of tourism which has a long history, and many countries have attractive places of devotion. In Lithuania, near Siauliai Fyziu Kalnas is a special place. Over a period of 180 years pilgrims have placed crosses as symbols. Now there are about 100,000 crosses, collected and concentrated in a small place. This has become a tourist attraction. Some crosses are large. Others are small gifts and there are lots of personal inscriptions, prayers and word of devotion. Somewhere the place looks very messy and unorganized that that is an important part of attraction value.
As an innovation, the Hill of Crosses has emerged over many years, and the survival during the Soviet period is part of the amazing narrative. The untidiness is adding value to the place.
